How to Pick Songs for a Wedding Ceremony (Even Without a ‘Couple Song’)

You know that scene in every rom-com where the couple slow dances in their kitchen to their song? The one that’s “always been theirs” since the night they met?

It’s sweet, cinematic… and a little unhelpful if you’re planning your wedding ceremony and don’t actually have that song.

If you’re feeling stuck trying to figure out how to pick songs for a wedding ceremony that feel personal and meaningful, don’t panic. You absolutely do not need a pre-existing “couple song” to make your music choices special.

Here’s how to choose music you’ll love, create the atmosphere you want, and walk down the aisle to something that feels perfectly you.

Think About the Mood You Want to Create

When deciding how to pick songs for a wedding ceremony, start with the feeling you want, not the memories you already have.

Ask yourself: what do I want this moment to feel like?

  • Romantic and soft? Instrumental piano versions of love songs are a timeless choice.
  • Joyful and upbeat? Modern acoustic tracks or sweet indie tunes can set a light, happy tone.
  • Elegant and timeless? Classical music is beautiful for creating that traditional, emotional moment.

Your wedding music doesn’t have to have a story attached, it just needs to set the mood you dream of for your ceremony.

Use Your Story as Inspiration

Even if you don’t have a traditional “couple song,” your story together can guide your choices.

  • Did you meet at a festival? Choose a piano cover of a song from that weekend.
  • Do you share a favorite TV show or film? There are beautiful instrumental versions of theme tunes.
  • Did a road trip playlist mark the start of your adventure together? Include one of those tracks in your pre-ceremony music.

Your wedding music doesn’t have to be the “most romantic” song in the world. It just needs to feel like you.

Ask Your Musician for Suggestions

If you’re hiring a live musician, you don’t need to have all the answers. (In fact, many of my couples start by saying, “We have no idea what we’re doing!”)

A good musician will suggest songs that fit the atmosphere you want, or even arrange a version of a song you love but didn’t think would work for a ceremony. At HMH Piano Collective, we always send our couples a sample of their ceremony entrance song ahead of the day, so they can make sure they are happy with it. And it’s a lovely keepsake to listen back to in the years to come!

This takes the pressure off and lets you just feel what fits – no musical expertise required.

Remember: The Music Becomes ‘Yours’ on the Day

The truth is, you don’t need an “our song” to make your ceremony music meaningful. The second you walk down the aisle to it, that song becomes part of your story forever. Years later, when you hear it again, it’ll take you right back to your wedding day.

The magic isn’t in the song itself, it’s in the moment you create with it.
