Setting the Mood: How Many Songs Should You Prepare for Your Background Wedding Music?

As you plan your wedding, you’re undoubtedly focusing on countless details, from the venue’s decor to the flavour of the cake. Yet, amidst all the excitement, there’s one element that often goes unnoticed but plays a pivotal role in creating the ambiance: the background music. Crafting the perfect playlist can seem like a daunting task, and a common question that arises is, ‘How many songs should I include for my background wedding music?’ In this guide we’ll unravel the art of calculating how much music you need, and how to make your background wedding music as stress free as possible!

How to curate your background wedding music playlist

Curating Your Playlists

Couples are always surprised when I tell them how much music I play to fill two sets of 45 minutes (for background wedding music during the drinks reception), and even more when I play background music during the wedding breakfast! There isn’t an exact science to putting together a background wedding music playlist, but first of all you need to know how long each section of the day will be. This will differ between venues, and I would always add on a little extra just to be safe!

As a general rule:

Guest arrival before the ceremony: half an hour (possibly more if you are having recorded music that will play in both the foyer of the venue and the ceremony room)

During the drinks reception: an hour and a half to two hours

Wedding breakfast: two hours

A song, on average, lasts about 3 minutes. This is of course a generalisation but it works for easy maths. So if you need to fill two hours, you will need roughly 40 songs. If you are creating playlists for all three sections of the day, and you don’t want anything repeated, that’s going to add up to around 90 songs!

Stress Free Background Wedding Music

Curating these playlists can be time consuming and stressful, particularly in the run up to the wedding when you have lots of different details to finalise. The beauty of booking a live musician is that they will curate these playlists for you, with guidance from you on what style of music you like, favourites you would like to hear from their playlists and any pieces of music you do not want played. It is one aspect of the day that can be quickly ticked off the wedmin list, freeing you up to focus on other areas that need your time and attention.
